Sri Lanka is blessed with a 1,330 km pristine coastline with white sandy beaches, blue waters which invite you to dive in and warm sunshine with the shade that is offered by tall Coconut trees that make you laze around for hours without a care in the world.
On the West Coast there is Negombo, Mount-Lavina, Bentota and Hikkaduwa Beaches. On the South Coast we got Unawatuna which has been voted as one of the 10 best beaches in the world by the Discovery

Channel. In addition to that we also have Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle in the Southern Coast. On the North West Coast we've got Nilaveli, Passekudha, Kalkudha and Arugam Bay, which is listed as one of the top 10 surfing destinations in the world. These are just few of over 20 popular beach destinations in Sri Lanka. The Unique factor is the climate of Sri Lanka. The Island experiences two monsoons which occur at different times which effects only either the West or the East Coast. So at any time of the year there is a Beach to visit.

  THE DUTCH FORT
in Galle - The South Coast's major city is Galle, whose oldest landmark is the massive Portuguese and Dutch Fort which is a “World Heritage Site” in which the central city is contained. But the city may be much older. Some scholars believe it to be the “Tarshish” of the Old Testament, to which King Solomon sent his merchant vessels, and to which Jonah fled from the Lord.
Today, the 90-acre Galle Fort shows no evidence of the Portuguese founders. The Dutch incorporated the Portuguese northern wall in a great rampart in 1663. A second, taller wall was built inside of it. Between the two walls, a covered passage connected the central bastion with the Fort's two half bastions overlooking the sea.
The Dutch also installed a sophisticated drainage system, complete with brick-lined underground sewers that were flushed twice a day by the high and low tides. The original gate to the fort was by the harbour. It is still there, marked by the British Coat-of-arms on the front and the Dutch V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) with the Coat-of-arms with a rooster crest, on the inner side of the Fort.

MADU GANGA

The Maduganga River is a shallow water body in south-west Sri Lanka, which enters the sea at Balapitiya. The Buddhist Amarapura Nikaya sect had its first upasampada (higher ordination ceremony) on a fleet of boats anchored upon it in 1803.

The Buddhist Kothduwa temple is situated on an isolated island in the lake. Together with the smaller Randombe Lake, to which it is connected by two narrow channels, it forms the Madu Ganga wetland. Its estuary and the many mangrove islets on it constitute a complex coastal wetland ecosystem. In has high ecological, biological and aesthetic significance, being home to 303 species of plants belonging to 95 families and to 248 species of vertebrate animals. It might be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka.

KOSGODA TURTLE HATCHERY

Where you can see five species of turtles-Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea).
The eggs collected by the Villagers and Fishermen are purchased by the Kosgoda Hatchery and kept in sandy pens until they are hatched. The newly hatched ones are kept in seawater tanks and released to the sea in the night. This Hatchery alone has released more then 1,750,000 young turtles to the sea. An endowment by the Hasselblad Estate was responsible for the establishment of this hatchery.
