THE MINNERIYA TANK
is one built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena, on the
concept of a onetime Great King of Sri Lanka: King
Parakramabahu. His concept was that “not a single drop of
water that falls from sky should be allowed to flow into the
sea without making use for the betterment of mankind”.
Situated 20Km northwest of Polonnaruwa, which is about 200km
from Colombo, this ancient tank has an area of 2550ha. The
National Park area, which is mainly the catchments area, was
initially declared as a sanctuary in 1938. The vegetation of
this area consists of mainly dry mixed evergreen forest and
much of Sri Lanka's wildlife, including elephant, is found
here.
YALA (RUHUNA) NATIONAL PARK
the Ruhunu National Park covers 126,786 hectares including
the Strict Natural Reserve (Block II). The most familiar is
Block I (14,101 hectares) and this were established in 1938.
Yala is famous for its big herds and large number of
Elephants, Leopards, Spotted Deer, Sambhur, Crocodiles,
Mongoose, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, and many other animals.
More than 130 bird species are recorded which includes the
resident and winter visitors.
There are 7 Bungalows inside the Park with few Camp Sites.
SIGIRIYA
is a “World Heritage Site” and the 5th Century “Fortress in
the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder
of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the
huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the Palace
on the summit of the 600-foot high rock. On its summit are
the foundations of the Royal Palace, Water Tanks to supply
water and all other buildings and at the edges the
guardhouses.
On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of
Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of
21 life sized damsels still shining in their original
colors. The Water Gardens, Fountain Garden, Summerhouses,
Boulder Gardens and the Caves within the enclosed area
should not be missed.

WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK
is 508 square miles (131.694 hectares) in extent and was
declared as a National Park in 1938. The special feature in
this Park is the large number of Villus (lakes) where you
can watch wild life and many species of birds.Leopards were
the most famous animal in this Park and are famous for its
Wild Elephant herds. Spotted Deer, Sambhur, Barking Deer,
Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, sloth Bear, Mongoose, Crocodile and
Peacocks are also found here.
Further Prince Vijaya landed on the north-western coast of
Sri Lanka in 543 BC and met Kuveni, the Yakkha princess of
the area. Thambapanni – the beach with copper sand and Kali
Villu where Kuweni had her palace are located inside the
park boundaries of Wilpattu.
SAFARI CAMP
in Minneriya is situated outside the park, with a
wonderful forest boundary atmosphere, which ensures you're
right in the heart of nature. Forget any ideas about cramped
